Noon - 3 p.m.: Chapter Leadership Workshop (CLW) - Network and share best practices! This workshop provides a detailed introduction to the Material Advantage Student Program for chapter officers. A boxed lunch will be provided. Registration is required for this workshop as well as MS&T conference registration. This workshop is for Material Advantage Chapter Officers only.
Pre-registration is required specifically for this event. Sign up on the conference registration form at the same time you pre-register for the MS&T conference. For more information, contact Candace Cunningham.
3:30 - 5:30 p.m.: Material Advantage Outreach Demonstration Expo - NEW for 2009! The Material Advantage Student Program will be showcasing outreach activities that have been developed by our very own Material Advantage Student Chapters. The Material Advantage Outreach Demonstration Expo will provide a venue for our chapters to share their activities with, not only other chapters, but with select student groups. This is also an excellent opportunity for Chapters who may not have a lot of experience in this area to see what other Chapters are doing which may generate new ideas. Tables are still available. If your Student Chapter is interested in participating with a demonstration, contact Candace Cunningham at students@asminternational.org.

1 - 5 p.m.: Undergraduate Student Speaking Contest - MS&T hosts the national semifinal and final rounds of the Material Advantage Undergraduate Student Speaking Contest, organized by the Ceramic Educational Council. Each Material Advantage Chapter is encouraged to hold local contests on campus prior to MS&T. Local contest winners will advance to the semifinal/final rounds. The presentation subject must be technical but can relate to any aspect of materials science and engineering. Participants receive a $300 travel grant awarded at the end of the semifinal/final rounds. Winners of the finals receive cash prizes. For contest rules, contact Tricia Nicol at tnicol@ceramics.org. National contestants must be reported to Dr. Elliott Slamovich at elliotts@ecn.purdue.edu by September 30, 2009.
1 - 5 p.m.: Student Service Project - NEW for 2009! Students have the opportunity to make a difference in the community by participating in this student service project, sponsored by the Material Advantage Student Program. The students will be divided into groups and working on landscaping, painting, and a walking trail. Busing, lunch, snacks and beverages, T-shirts, tools, equipment and all materials will be provided. The projects will be first come, first served so sign-up early. Lend a hand and give back to the community by participating in this worthwhile event! 6 - 7:30 p.m.: Undergraduate Student Poster Contest Display - Stop by the David L. Lawrence Convention Center to view all the submissions to the 2009 undergraduate poster contest. The posters will be displayed from Sunday, October 25, to Wednesday, October 28. For more information about this poster contest for undergraduates or to enter a poster abstract, contact Dr. Kevin Fox at Kevin.Fox@srnl.doe.gov. Deadline for poster abstracts is September 30, 2009.
8 - 10:30 p.m.: Student Networking Mixer - Join in this relaxed, casual, and fun atmosphere designed for students, Material Advantage Faculty Advisors, and society volunteer leaders. Students are encouraged to wear their school colors. Beer, soft drinks, dry snacks, and music will be provided. In accordance with Pennsylvania state law, alcoholic beverages will be served only to attendees at least 21 years old. Proper I.D. that clearly states date of birth must be presented by those wishing to drink alcohol.

7 a.m. - 5 p.m.: Undergraduate Student Poster Contest Display
8 a.m. - noon: AIST Student Plant Tour - The best way to learn about steel and the advanced technology in steelmaking is to actually visit a steel plant. See for yourself how a career in today’s steel industry may be just what you are looking for. More information is coming soon!
10 a.m. - 2 p.m.: ACerS PCSA Student Tour of Anter Corporation - Tour this Pittsburgh manufacturer of dilatometers for thermal expansion (CTE) and sintering studies, thermal conductivity meters, thermal diffusivity systems (laser flash) and specific heat capacity measuring instruments to test solids, powders, and liquids. Students will see Anter’s products in a laboratory setting and will get an overview of their use in material characterization. Students will also see the manufacturing process from beginning to end. Bus transportation will be provided. To sign up for the tour, contact Claire Weiss by Oct. 1.
12:30 - 2 p.m.: Student and Professor Lunch with the AIST Foundation Board of Trustees - The mission of the AIST Foundation is to ensure the iron and steel industry of tomorrow will have a sufficient number of qualified professionals.” The Trustees want to gain first-hand insight by meeting with students and professors in order to plan Foundation scholarships and programs that will best accomplish the mission. Invited speaker: Dr. Daniele Finotello, the program director for the NSF-DMR Office of Special Programs, will be speaking about the opportunites for undergraduate students regarding the educational activities at NSF.
7 - 9 p.m.: AIST Student Steel Industry Reception - Visit with representatives and executives from the steel industry to discuss career opportunities. There will be good food in a casual atmosphere where you can ask all the questions you want and get answers. Sign-up to attend by October 5 with Lori Wharrey.

11 a.m. - 2 p.m.: Career Connection - Job or Graduate School? Find out about potential employment and internship opportunities as well as graduate programs from representatives of corporate human resource departments and universities. Make sure you bring copies of your resume!

11:15 - 12:15 p.m.: Mug Drop Contest - Mugs fabricated by students from ceramic raw materials are judged on aesthetics and breaking thresholds. Mugs are dropped from varying levels until the breaking threshold is reached. The mug with the highest successful drop distance wins! To compete, register no later than October 16, 2009 by contacting Dr. William Hammetter at wfhamme@sandia.gov.
12:15 - 1:15 p.m.: Putting Contest - Teams of four students compete using putters and balls they fabricated. Each team member must have his or her own putter and ball, which are judged prior to the contest. Prizes are awarded on aesthetics, closest putt, and best putting team (the team achieving the shortest combined distance from the hole). To register your team of four, contact Dr. William Hammetter at wfhamme@sandia.gov no later than October 16.
